Other TopicsMarine Panels - Mesothelioma and Asbestos Exposure Risks
The destruction of asbestos has reached to the far corners of many parts of everyday life. However, no industry was harder hit than that of the marine industry. People working at jobs building boats or working on boats themselves are highly at risk for developing mesothelioma. Mesothelioma is a rare form of cancer that can only be contracted when a person is exposed to asbestos. Unfortunately, asbestos was once used in hundreds of different building materials and consumer products, including marine panels.
Marine panels are used on ships to build walls, ceilings, and even floors. Since they're used on ships, they must be heat-resistant to ward off fire, while still water resistant to prevent warping. Asbestos made a great material to use in this situation, as it is strong, flexible, heat-resistant, durable, and cheap.
However, asbestos is also very dangerous. Although found naturally in the earth, asbestos is a mineral that causes mesothelioma in humans and other animals. The problem with asbestos fibers is that they are very jagged. When dealing with asbestos, the fibers fill the air like a cloud of dust, and anyone in the area becomes in danger of developing mesothelioma due to breathing in or swallowing these small fibers. The asbestos fibers embed in the soft tissues surrounding your lungs, heart, or stomach, and over time mesothelioma develops as the tissue begins to mutate. However, mesothelioma has few symptoms that can be noticed until the tumors grow large enough to disrupt organ systems, and by that time, the mesothelioma cells will have traveled to many parts of the body, causing cancerous tumors everywhere. Unfortunately, by the time it gets to this state, the mesothelioma is largely untreatable. Most people who develop mesothelioma after asbestos exposure die soon after they discover the problem. Sadly, in many cases, the asbestos exposure happened decades before, so they never even knew that there was a problem.
People in marine industries are especially at risk for developing mesothelioma due to the fact that they were exposed to asbestos within closed areas. While the asbestos may have may the ship a bit safer in regards to fire, the air was filled with asbestos, making it a dangerous place to breathe. Today, marine panels containing asbestos are still causing new cases of mesothelioma. As ships wear out, restorations teams are tackling the repairs. Unfortunately, this leads to asbestos exposure and a high rate of mesothelioma. Ship restoration is one of the most dangerous jobs for this reason.
Remember, tons of products used in the marine industry and made before the 1980s contained asbestos and can potentially cause mesothelioma. If you are working in or on an older ship, you could be at risk. Talk to a professional and get the area test for asbestos. Also, because mesothelioma only develops over many, many years, go to a mesothelioma doctor and get tested in your worked in the marine industry in the past. Your families are at risk too, as asbestos was often easily transported home on clothing and in hair. It is better to be safe than to be sorry - get tested for mesothelioma because early detection is your key to surviving this cancer. A mesothelioma lawyer may also be able to help. If you believe your were unknowingly exposed to asbestos, even if it happened many decades ago, get legal help today!
