Asbestos In Shipyards

Mare Island Naval Shipyard

Located in California, Mare Island Naval Shipyard was the first shipyard on the west coast for the Navy, which played an important role during both World Wars. However, there are many concerns for the men and women who worked on the shipyard and contracted mesothelioma due to asbestos exposure.

Many Navy ships were sent out of Mare Island Naval Shipyard to protect the United States from Native American uprisings in the Pacific Northwest. Patrol boats were also dispatched to Central America to make sure American interests in the area were protected. Mare Island Naval Shipyard was an important hub during the 1800's for battleships.

Naval Shipyard broke the record for building a destroyer faster than any other shipyard in the United States. During World War II, the shipyard seemed to be the center of the war efforts in the Pacific. Most of the ships that needed to be built or repaired were sent to Mare Island Naval Shipyard.

Due to extensive use of the shipyard, many workers were exposed to asbestos. This has led many of them to contract the fatal disease mesothelioma.

After the World War II, Mare Island Naval Shipyard became a major nuclear submarine shipyard. They even held the first nuclear submarine on the Pacific Coast. In the early 1990s, the area was closed as a Naval Shipyard and was leased back to commercial industries and government agencies such as Forest Services and the Coast Guard.
